This course will prepare graduates for registration as Comprehensive Registered Nurses within Australia and elsewhere, and allow professional practice in a variety of clinical settings. The course centres learning on the concept of a professional therapeutic nurse/client relationship and takes into account individual, contextual and modifying factors in understanding and planning nursing care. Early studies emphasise the need for a good understanding of nursing and biosciences, as these are foundational for later studies which focus on the complexities of competence and knowledge required of caring health professionals. Extensive workplace consolidation of theory to practice and experiential learning opportunities will be features of the course in developing highly competent and sought after graduates. Students will be required to participate in clinical placements in a variety of locations within the Peel Region, Perth Metropolitan area and regional Western Australia. AdmissionAdmission Requirements: As per normal undergraduate admission requirements, and must have a clean Police Record. Recommended TEE Subjects: Human Biology, Discrete Mathematics, English and Chemistry. International students demonstrating English competence via Academic IELTS need a score of 7.0, with no individual band less than 7.0. Special Requirements: A clear National Police Clearance is required as well as a level of health suitable to meet the requirements of such a course and to meet safe nursing practice. On commencement, students will be required to obtain serology results for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, MRSA and Tuberculosis (mantoux test). They will also be required to be vaccinated against Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis. Students will be required to provide copies of a current CPR certificate, Working with Children Card, Department of Health WA Criminal Screening Card and Manual Handling Certificate. Alternative Pathway Entries: An alternative entry pathway exists via the Nursing (Combination) from Challenger TAFE (Peel). This pathway will provide applicants with advanced standing once they enter the Bachelor of Nursing. Indigenous students also may enter via the Koort Mooditj (Strong Heart) Pre-Nursing course. Enrolled Nurses may enter the course. Career OptionsProfessional Recognition: Graduates from this course will be eligible to apply to the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia for registration in the category of Registered Nurse (Comprehensive). At point of application to the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia, graduates will need to provide proof of having met an IELTS score of at least 7 in each band, if their primary or secondary education took place in a country where English is not the native language. Results from tests completed more than two (2) years prior to application for registration will not be accepted. Students should note that the course must be completed within six years of commencement to be eligible for registration. Employment Prospects: There is a shortage of registered nurses nationwide. A strong professional training in the essential areas of general and mental health nursing for clients of all ages across the life span will facilitate job selection in Australia and many overseas countries where Australian nurses are sought.
